Cluster’s Last Stand @ The Ruck | September 12th
A collaboration between Smuttynose and Stone, Cluster’s is a 30 Barrel Short Batch Series release that didn’t see much distribution, especially not in the Capital District. Hit up The Ruck for what may be your only chance to taste this throwback to the OG American IPA along with some other hard to find offerings from both breweries.
Night of the Funk / Belgian Beer Fest @ The Cyclorama | September 13th-14th
Not much to say here other than take a look at the damn beer lineups. They speak for themselves. I volunteered last year and am looking forward to enjoying the fest to its fullest this year.
Hoptember Harvestfest @ Dutchess Hops | September 14th
The first of a couple of beer events in the Hudson Valley this month, this one located at Dutchess Hops, a hop farm in Lagrangeville, NY home to about 4000 hills of about a dozen different variety of hops. Personal favorites Captain Lawrence, Chatham, Crossroads, Peekskill, and Rushing Duck are all participating. Tickets are sold out.
Patriots Day Pig Roast @ The Ruck | September 14th

Zwanze Day | September 14th

Ruin Ten IPA Imperial IPA ABV. 10.8%
RUINING PALATES SINCE 2002 n June 2012, we celebrated the 10th birthday of our notoriously mega-hopped double IPA, Stone Ruination IPA, with the release of a very special version that was even bigger and, incredibly, even hoppier than the original. If Stone Ruination IPA is “A Liquid Poem to the Glory of the Hop,” then Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA was an amped-up heavy metal version of that ode delivered with the force of a sledgehammer. Stone 17th Anniversary Götterdämmerung IPA Imperial IPA ABV. 9.5%
Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Imperial Russian Stout Imperial Stout ABV. 10.5%
“There’s no question that Stone Imperial Stout is revered among enthusiasts,” states Stone CEO Greg Koch. “I know, because I’m one of ’em and I can hardly wait for it to come out each year!” Some may think that a late Spring release for a special brew of this sort is an odd time for it to come out onto the market. Koch justifies this with the rationalization “What better than a warm time of year to come out with a brew that tastes great as it warms up!” That’s because “ice cold” is certainly not the appropriate way to serve the beer. Nearly without exception, the darker, richer and more alcoholic a brew is, the warmer the serving temperature should be. The Stone Imperial Stout label describes the brew as being “intensely aromatic (notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness and alcohol) and heavy on the palate…expect this mysterious brew to pour like used motor oil and taste even heavier! Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it … Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale … serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, it’s officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was “Belgianized”. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime. Ratebeer: 97
Stone Pale Ale American Pale Ale ABV. 5.4%

Look up “hops” in the dictionary and you’ll see a picture of Stone IPA! “Dry-hopped” for an extra two weeks, this unique process gives our IPA its bountiful hop aroma and rich hop flavor. Cali- Belgique IPA Belgian Style IPA ABV. 6.9%
When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA. The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Take the Black Stout is named for the oath taken by those who stand the Night’s Watch at the Wall, defending Westeros against northern threats. Take the Black Stout is a 7% beer, brewed with base, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley malts. Hopping includes Northern Brewer and Columbus; spices are licorice root and star anise. Rushing Duck War Elephant Imperial IPA- 8.7% Chester, NY
War Elephant is as unapologetic as Double IPAs get. At over 4lbs. of hops per barrel, War Elephant contains a completely irrational amount of hops designed to create a unique hop experience. It has a “smack-you-in-the-face” hop aroma consisting of pine needles, grapefruit, tangerine, and other citrus fruits. Unlike many other Double IPAs, though, War Elephant has a subdued malt character so it’s never cloyingly sweet, and at 80 IBUs it isn’t overly bitter. Like all Rushing Duck beers, War Elephant is unfiltered so as not to strip any of the precious hop aromas from the beer. As a result it has a hazy golden color with a thick rocky head.
Rushing Duck Planet Funkotron Sour- 5.2% Chester, NY
Brett soured witbier. Planet Funkotron begins with a grain bill reminiscent of Belgian Wit Beer. It is brewed with 40% wheat and has additions of Orange Peel, Coriander, and Grains of Paradise. However, the addition of Brettanomyces gives the beer complex notes of pear and tropical fruit with a slight tartness. As the beer ages the Brett will continue to mature the beer to develop even more fruity flavors as well as a spicy, earthy, funkiness.
Nine Pin Cider Works Hard Cider- 6.7% Albany, NY
Our local cider! It is produced with a white wine yeast, and only apples grown exclusively at 3 orchards surrounding the capital region. This semi dry cider is sparkling and refreshing. Be revolutionary, consider the apple!
Captain Lawrence Golden Delicious-10% Elmsford, NY
Batch 1 (2008) and Batch 2 (2010) of Captain Lawrence’s Extra Gold aged in apple brandy barrels. There’s nothing quite likes Mom’s apple pie…But I am willing to bet this beer is pretty darn close. An American Tripel, dry-hoped with Amarillo hops and aged in Apple Brandy barrels from one of this country’s oldest distilleries. The tropical aroma of the hops and the delicate apple aroma from the barrels are a perfect match.
Captain Lawrence Xtra Gold Abbey Tripel -10% Elmsford, NY
This beer is an American adaptation to the classic Belgian style of beer known as a Tripel. Historically Tripels were brewed to have a very light golden color, a moderate hop presence, and be around 9% alcohol. But we are not in Belgium, so I decided to crank up the hops, dry hop the beer with American Amarillo hops, and brew it to 10% ABV. This is our American Tripel, enjoy. Sensory Profile: Enjoy in a goblet or wine glass. Tropical fruit and honey are the two biggest aromas coming from this lively brew. While the hop bitterness is not as powerful as an IPA, the hop flavor melds nicely with the fruity flavors created by the imported Belgian yeast strain used

Horseheads Chocolate Porter-7% Horseheads, NY
This style of beer is classified in the “American Porter” category. The focus is obviously on the very dark roasted malts used in the brewing process to impart a “chocolaty flavor”.This is our Valentine’s Special.
Horseheads Orion Dark Belgian-Style IPA-6.9% Horseheads, NY
The beer formally known as “Nebula”, is a Belgian-Style dark IPA. The focus is not only on the yeast used during the brewing process, but also on the hops and dark grains. The yeast imparts a fruity and spicy flavor/aroma to the beer, followed by a sharp bite from the hops, then late in the finish you enjoy the flavor of the dark grains. Our version has no added fruit or spice.
Crossroads Black Rock Stout-7.3% Athens, NY
Black Rock Stout is a dark and robust, full bodied foreign style stout that bursts with flavor. Roasted barley and chocolate malt combine with sweet and fruity fermentation flavors to create the rich body of this full flavored brew. American hops help balance out the robust malt flavor and the high alcohol content adds a touch of sweetness and warming sensation on the palate. This ale is not for the faint of heart.
Ommegang Rare Vos- 6.5% Cooperstown, NY
Rare Vos Amber Ale is styled after the smooth, drinkable beers popular in Belgian cafés. It pours a light copper hue, contrasting beautifully with a big, creamy white head. The nose offers orange blossoms and slight spice. On the palate, the caramel maltiness shines strongly but with little sweetness. The profile leans toward dry fruity (yeast-affiliated), slightly fruity/hoppy with a beguiling spiciness. This complex, medium-bodied beer has a smooth mid-palate and moderate dry finish. Well-balanced in all elements, it’s a mild, mellow and highly quaffable brew.

As the name implies, Mother’s Milk is a dark and creamy milk stout. Hints of oatmeal, chocolate and of course, milk make this brew have a remarkably smooth and silky finish, a classic example of the style.
Southern Tier IPA- 7.3% Lakewood, NY
IPA stands for India Pale Ale and Southern Tier’s is an American version of the classic style. IPA’s namesake lies in its colonial roots. British soldiers on their way to India drank a lot of beer, but found it would go stale on the long voyages. Meanwhile, brewers knew that by adding more hops, the beer would stay fresh. Voila! A new style was born and it is one Southern Tier is proud to brew. Southern Tier IPA is triple-hopped on its journey to your glass for a fully aromatic experience. Enjoy.
Crossroads Outrage IPA- 7% Athens, NY
Outrage is an Indian Pale Ale featuring the robust and assertive flavors of American hops balanced by a sweet malt body and high alcohol content. Crossroads uses the highest quality English malts to create a bright copper color and smooth rich body for this ale. However, hops are the real feature of Outrage IPA. Simcoe, Cascade, Centennial, Amarillo, and Citra hops are added throughout the brewing process to yield an assertive grapefruit-like bitterness. Brooklyn Lager- 5.2% Brooklyn, NY
Brooklyn Lager, the Brewery’s flagship label, is New York’s “hometown” beer, brewed to a pre-Prohibition recipe that dates back to the days when Brooklyn was the brewing capital of the East Coast. Ithaca Cascazilla Red Ale-7% Ithaca, NY
The name CascaZilla is a play on both the name of our local Cascadilla Gorge and the monster amounts of Cascade hops in this beer. This red ale gets its distinctive color from a healthy portion of caramel malt, which also lends some body and sweetness to the beer. This beer from Albany’s hometown brewpub shows why they are a premier location for quality hand crafted beer. Awarded Gold medals as the best brown ale in America at the 2000 and 2002 Great American Beer Festival! This copper-brown brew has a strong hop presence and firm, malty backbone. Generous amounts of Horizon, Amarillo and Crystal hops are balanced by rich German Munich malt and just a touch of roasted malt
Brown’s Brewing Company Black Lager- 5% Troy, NY
Brown’s tribute to the German Schwarzbier (Black Beer) style. Very dark brown in color with underlying roasted malt and chocolate notes with a subtle hop character. Despite its dark appearance, Brown’s Black Lager is deceptively very clean, light bodied and easy drinking. As a lager, this beer is very crisp, smooth and refreshing, yet it maintains a pleasantly balanced malt character and at 5.0% abv a nice sessionable lager to fit everyone’s taste.

Naysayer Pale Ale is a west coast styled pale ale that has a more hoppy character than most IPA’s. It has a modest ABV, medium-light body and 33 IBUs which helps it maintain the drinkability of a great pale ale.
Rushing Duck Bauli Saison- 6% Chester, NY
A new take on an old style. Saison’s originated in the South of Belgium and are famous for the distinctive fruity, spicy notes given off from the yeast. They also tend to be lighter, effervescent, and quenching. Bauli Saison is all of that, but adds a unique twist. We’ve added White Peppercorns, Coriander, and Kaffir Lime Leaves to the beer to enhance the spice flavors naturally produced by the yeast as well as adding a distinct citrus flavor to make it a lighter beer on the palate but still providing tons of flavor.
Rushing Duck Beanhead Coffee Porter- 5.7% Chester, NY
Beanhead takes the base beer of a robust porter and pairs is with a fantastic coffee flavor that comes from a Guatemalan bean roasted by Java Love Coffee Roasting Co. in Kauneonga Lake, NY. Beanhead is completely black in color with an impressive tan head. It has a taste of intense coffee with overtones of bittersweet cocoa and caramel malt balanced with a slight earthy bitterness. While it may look filling, Beanhead is actually medium bodied and lacks the cloying sweetness that makes so many other stouts and porters seem so “heavy.”
