Upcoming Event: Craft New York Brewers Festival

New York beer has been improving by leaps and bounds over the past couple of years. I’ve been to some really cool collaborative events up here lately, from the 11 X 11 Chef’s Beer Dinner at Newburgh Brewing Company during Hudson Valley Craft Beer Week, to the Brewery at Bacchus tap takeover at The Beer Belly with Suarez Family Brewery, Plan Bee Farm Brewery, and Sloop Brewing. We even have an awesome dinner upcoming from two of my favorite local breweries Rare Form and Common Roots at Henry Street Taproom during next week’s Saratoga Beer Week.

The New York State Brewers Association holds an event once a year at The Desmond to not only showcase New York beer, but also echo some of these collaborative beer community efforts like I listed above, whether it be between local brewers, local distillers (with second use of their barrels), or chefs of our local food scene in the Capital Region and beyond. And unlike far too many of the festivals we see around here, brewery staff and reps will actually be present to pour and chat about their beer, and let’s not forget the $40 presale ticket is extremely reasonably priced for unlimited tastings *and* local food in a much nicer venue than your typical convention center beer fest.

Peck’s Arcade Italian-Grandma Dinner

Before the new year the crew at Peck’s Arcade held another popup, this time a dinner in the style of your “Italian Grandma” rather than the noodle shop popups they have done in the past. The event was held a few times over the holidays and all of the classics were there, such as lasagna, homemade pasta, parm dishes and meatballs. Tables were decked out in iconic red and white checked tablecloths and a few Italian inspired cocktails were offered along with Italian and Italian-American wine. Italian-American cuisine is not something I go out for too often since I have a pretty good grasp of it at home, but it’s always nice to sit back, relax and let Chef Nick and his team do the cooking while sitting at the Chef’s Counter for a little entertainment for the evening. Let’s take a look:

More NYC

The Ides at Wythe Hotel

Took a weekend right before the holidays to head down to NYC with a few friends and like usual, explore a bit, show them some of my favorite spots, check out some new ones, and grab some good food and drink. Some of the places I’ve been to in the past so I’ve included pictures from past visits as well.

NYC Day Trip

I’ve been doing a bunch of exploring around New York City the past year or so, but I haven’t done much posting or writing about it. With a day off on Black Friday I decided to head down to the City and check off a few places on my list with an ol’ buddy of mine, Chef Elliot Cunniff. (Capital Region readers may remember Elliot from his days at MezzaNotte and Creo, and he’s since gone on to do stints in NYC for Daniel Boulud, David Burke, and now has taken the reigns at Soho Grand Hotel.) We started our food and drink adventure in Brooklyn, followed by Queens and ended the day in Manhattan.

Lil’ Danny’s BIG NIGHT (Suarez Family Brewery x Gaskins) | Germantown, NY

A very cool event went down last week where one of the most anticipated breweries coming to New York next year made its Upstate NY debut: Suarez Family Brewery. Owner/Brewer Dan Suarez is a Hill Farmstead alum and his beers are definitely something worth seeking out when the brewery opens in early 2016. Some pilot brews made an appearance, like How Are We and Big Night, along with collaborations done with Threes Brewing and Brewery at Bacchus.

B. United / OEC Brewing | Oxford, CT

B. United / OEC Brewing
“Wow.” That’s all I can say about my visit to B. United and OEC brewing this past weekend. Going from one industrial park brewery after another after another, most breweries start to look the same, even with the nicest transformation of their tasting room. B. United and OEC’s space is something truly different, and they’re going way, WAY above and beyond to bring some really unique beers and methods of brewing and fermentation to the Northeast.
