It was nice finding this little gem after taking turns driving through the night from Upstate New York with a pit stop for dinner at Of Love & Regret. Breakfast is one of things that you can so easily cheat out on and just stop at a Starbucks or McDonald’s, so finding a nice privately-owned restaurant with some great food on a road trip is always a plus for me. Let’s dig in.
Breakfast
Egg in a Basket
Eataly‘s Prosciutto and Provolone Bread, fried in garlic butter, topped with a pinch of fresh cracked pepper, crushed red and grated parm. Perfect Sunday morning breakfast.
The Everything Bagel from Albany Bagel Co.
Albany Bagel Co. has been something of an enigma in these parts, with their Facebook page appearing seemingly out of nowhere, followed by some interesting, albeit confusing map overlays of the area with a few other historical posts with really no explanation of what they had to do with Albany Bagel Co. other than the city in their namesake.
Pulled Pork Eggs Benedict
Whipped these up this morning for my first foray in poached eggs, after seeing Dave make some last weekend. Not the prettiest eggs I have ever seen, and I could have taken them out a little sooner but they went well with this weekend’s pulled pork and the hollandaise sauce I tossed a little South Carolina Mustard BBQ Sauce in and some Man Hash Browns.
Corned Beef Hash at Johny’s Diner
– When Johny’s posted about their breakfast specials for the weekend, something caught my eye: Homemade Corned Beef Hash. I don’t know if you guys know this about me but I’m a hash fanatic. On our travels, if a diner lists hash you can bet your ass I’m going to get a side of it to see if it’s the crap out of a can or if it’s the real deal. Unfortunately, it’s out of the can more often than not, so when I see the good stuff I’m pretty ecstatic.
There’s a couple of places that come to mind in the area that have homemade hash like Cafe 217 and New World Bistro, but at the time Johny’s was the only straight-up diner that I knew who served it. (I was later notified by derryX that Duncan’s Diary Bar also does homemade hash as well, so I hit them up for a taste this past weekend. More on that soon).
We split the order of hash, while Elise got a breakfast wrap that was on special and I went with the All Meat omelette. The hash was without a doubt the best I’ve had from a diner in the area. Johny’s was perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of browning and crispiness, without the added pretentiousness of some of the uppity-up “brunch” places that also serve hash. This is the stuff I grew up on, but better. The corned beef is cured and ground in house, just like the sausage found in both of our main dishes is ground and seasoned in house as well. These are such simple steps to make your dishes pop I’m not sure why any diner would serve the prepackaged versions. Add on top to that some stand out cheeses in both of our meals and we left with very full bellies.
Of course no visit to Johny’s would be complete without a look at at the Burger Challenge Wall of Shame. Failing miserably at the omelette challenge is next on my radar.

Eggs Benny at The Breakfast Club
Some serious grub was in order after a long day of drinking before and at Night of the Funk. A quick check of local breakfast spots on Foursquare told me The Breakfast Club was where it’s at. I packed up my travel bags and headed on the way.
From the outside it looks like a typical diner but the inside changes things dramatically. The entire diner from the decor to the soundtrack and the menu is all 80s themed with movies posters and old school lunch boxes on every wall.
The breakfast itself was solid, but I’ll be honest I’m kicking myself for not going with one of their Library Specials, all named after characters from The Breakfast Club. Next time…
Fat Man Tip of the Week
Eat Cocoa Pebbles in a mason jar. When finished you’ll have a tasty glass of chocolate milk waiting for you.
